As we occasionally
receive enquiries about Dave & Barbara's old bands (Egg, Hatfield &
The North, National Health, Bruford, Spirogyra, etc.) we have compiled the following
list of currently available CD's. (It's now quite badly out of date, sorry!)
Please note that WE CANNOT SUPPLY THESE CDs.
EGG (1969) UK (Deram 844 168-2), Japan (Deram POCD 1843) THE POLITE FORCE (1970) Japan (Deram POCD 1844) THE CIVIL SURFACE (1974) UK (Virgin CACD 1510), Japan (Virgin VJD 5026)'Civil Surface' was a reunion album recorded after Egg's split in '72, featuring hitherto unrecorded material from the band's live set. The UK CD version of 'Egg' (if you can find it) includes 'Seven Is A Jolly Good Time' and 'You Are All Princes', 'A' & 'B' side of the group's only single.

ARZACHEL (1969) UK (Drop Out Records DOCD 1983)Effectively the only recording by Uriel, this is a one-off psychedelic album recorded in an afternoon by the Egg line-up plus erstwhile Uriel guitarist Steve Hillage. Contractual problems with Decca were avoided by the use of ridiculous pseudonyms - in Dave & Clive's case, the names of much hated school teachers. The 1994 re-release on Drop Out Records features a detailed sleeve note by Dave Stewart.
SPACE SHANTY (1972) UK (Deram 844 008-2) Japan (Deram POCD 1845)Steve Hillage left Uriel in 1969 to go to Kent University, and in 1970 formed his own band Khan. Their debut (and only) album features Dave Stewart guesting on keyboards.

HATFIELD AND THE NORTH (1973) Worldwide (Virgin CDV 2008) THE ROTTERS' CLUB (1975) Worldwide (Virgin CDV 2030) AFTERS (compilation) Not available on CD HATFIELD AND THE NORTH* - LIVE 1990 (1993) UK & export (Demon/CODE 90 NINETY 6)CD version of debut LP includes 'Let's Eat (Real Soon)' and 'Fitter Stoke Has A Bath', 'A' & 'B' side of Hatfield's only single. 'The Rotters' Club' CD has 3 live bonus tracks previously only available on the vinyl-only 'Afters'. There is no material on 'Afters' which is not on one or other of the 2 CD's. In 1990 the band (minus Dave Stewart) re-formed to record a T.V. reunion show, most of which can be heard on a live album entitled 'Hatfield and The North - Live 1990' now available from Demon Records. On this, Sophia Domancich (Pip Pyle's erstwhile girlfriend) plays keyboards.

NATIONAL HEALTH (1978) UK & export (Charly/Decal CDLIK 66) OF QUEUES AND CURES (1978) UK & export (Charly/Decal CDLIK 70) DS AL CODA (1981) UK & export (Voiceprint VP129CD) NATIONAL HEALTH - COMPLETE (1990) USA/Canada (East Side Digital ESD 80402/412) MISSING PIECES (1996) USA/Canada (East Side Digital ESD 81172) UK & export (Voiceprint VP113CD)Born at the time of punk, National Health struggled at first to find a record deal. By the time Charly Records released the group's much-delayed debut album in 1977, the band had undergone several key changes of membership, and only recorded one further album ('Of Queues & Cures') before breaking up in 1980. After Alan Gowen's untimely death from leukaemia in 1981, the band reformed to record a tribute album of his compositions, 'DS Al Coda', which has now been released on CD by the excellent UK specialist label Voiceprint. For the committed collector, all 3 albums can be found in their entirety, augmented by some interesting bonus tracks, on the lovingly compiled 'National Health - Complete' double CD set. This comes with a lengthy tragi-comic history of the band written by Dave Stewart..
FEELS GOOD TO ME (1978) Japan/USA (EGCD 33) ONE OF A KIND (1979) Japan/USA (EGCD 40) THE BRUFORD TAPES (live)(1979) Japan (Virgin VJD 28054), Rest of World (EEGCD 6) GRADUALLY GOING TORNADO (1980) Japan/USA (EGCD 44)'Feels Good To Me' is a Bill Bruford solo LP on which Dave Stewart (then with National Health) appears on keyboards. In 1979 Bill & Dave formed 'Bruford', made 'One Of A Kind' with Allan Holdsworth on guitar, then 2 more albums with his replacement John Clark. The 4 albums were initially released in Japan only, but 'The Bruford Tapes' is out now worldwide, with the other 3 to follow.

Short lived gigging band formed by Dave & Pip, recorded only demos
- even these were incomplete! Consequently, no records or CD's available.

The 3 albums have now been reissued - the Korean editions on Si-Wan Records are available on both CD and vinyl LP, the latter in a 3 box set with 70's-style gate fold sleeves and a poster! Continuing their staunch support for the band, Si-Wan Records have also released a 4-CD box set containing all three studio albums plus a CD single. Included is a 55-page booklet with photos and all the song lyrics.
The April 2000 release 'Burn The Bridges' is a CD of previously unheard Spirogyra recordings, recorded at Kent University, Canterbury. These carefully recorded demo tapes were lost for nearly thirty years, but have now been meticulously restored.

HEALTH WARNING - 'We Were A Happy Crew' (released in March 1999) is a Mooncrest Records (UK) Spirogyra compilation, featuring a selection of tracks from the band's three 1970's albums. Unfortunately the CD was mastered by Mooncrest from dubious sources, and the resulting product is of poor sonic quality, with distortion and extraneous noises throughout. At the insistence of Barbara Gaskin the CD has now been properly mastered from the original master tapes, and anyone who owns the original faulty pressing may swap it for the re-mastered CD. (If in any doubt which version you own, check the opening 7 or 8 seconds of track 5 - if you hear a loud knocking sound like someone kicking a mike stand, you've got the original!) To get your replacement, contact:

On returning from a 3 1/2 year trip to India, Indonesia & Japan, Barbara
was invited to join this all-female Canterbury band by drummer Germaine Dolan.
Red Roll-On played plenty of gigs, but never recorded an album - only recorded
work (other than demos) were 2 songs on the 'First Offenders' Canterbury local
bands compilation album (Criminal Records, 1981) now deleted, not available
on CD.
MUSIC FROM A ROUND TOWER (1996) UK/Europe/Japan (Voiceprint/Resurgence RES120CD) USA/Canada (East Side Digital ESD 81212)
An absolutely brilliant solo album from Dave Stewart's musical mentor and 'Egg' co-founder. This multi-instrumental CD, devised as one continuous piece, is Campbell's first release since 1970!

The duo album 'Two Rainbows Daily' features some very nimble and intuitive playing. 'Before A Word Is Said', the last album Alan recorded before his death, came out on Voiceprint at the same time as the National Health musical tribute to Gowen, 'D.S. Al Coda'.

On 'Digging In', Phil took a different approach, overdubbing Fred Baker & Pete Lemer on material programmed by him and Pip Pyle. The results show that MIDI sequencing and intelligent composing can go together. 'Double Up' is a duo album with Fred Baker (bass).

UP - L'EQUIP OUT (1991) France (Gimini Music 3 TMR 301)Sadly, Pip died in 2006. He had been living in Paris since the early 80's, and has worked with Sophia Domancich (pno) and his own band L'Equip Out. (Trans: The Out Team). His solo album 'Seven Year Itch' has a deranged pop slant and features contributions from many of his collaborators, past and present!
Yet another Miller/Pyle pairing, this CD features the quartet of Phil, Pip, Didier Malherbe (flt/sax) and Hugh Hopper (bass) recorded live in France.SHORT WAVE - LIVE (1993) France (Gimini Music GM1003)

The gormless hippy from T.V.'s 'The Young Ones' joined forces with Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin in 1984 to record an amusing version of Traffic's 'Hole In My Shoe'. The single's inevitable chart success spawned a further collaboration, the magnificent 'Neil's Heavy Concept Album', now available on CD after years of wrangling with Warner's legal breadheads.

The following folk are all musically (and comedically) active in the 90's:
DIRK 'MONT' CAMPBELL (EGG / NATIONAL HEALTH)
'Music From A Round Tower' is the first album release by composer and multi-instrumentalist Dirk Campbell since the early 70's. In those days, he was known as Mont Campbell, one of the most respected composers in the English progressive avant-garde, and founder member, along with Dave Stewart, of the organ trio Egg. In 1972 Mont quit the music scene altogether and worked as a graphic designer, briefly returning in 1976 to play bass and compose for Dave Stewart's band National Health.
During the 80's, Dirk (having shed his old school nickname) became expert on a wide range of ethnic wind instruments, and developed an interest in traditional music. In 1991 he began to compose for film and television, winning a BAFTA award in 1993. In 1995, inspired by the compositional possibilities of MIDI and the sound of acoustic world musical instruments, Dirk began work on his first solo album, Music From A Round Tower. The piece is a summing-up of Campbell's musical experiences to date, from his childhood in Egypt and East Africa, through early Stravinsky to synthesised soundscapes and performance art. The music is both beautiful and intelligent, and has been described as "the real progressive music for the 90's". Composed in an East Sussex oast house, the album was completed with the help of old friend Dave Stewart.
Musicians: Dirk Campbell (ney flute, kaval, reedpipes, bansri, gaida, tulum, daoul, whistle, keyboards, vocals), George Hadjineophytou (saz, oud, kemanche), Barbara Gaskin, Lucianne Lassalle (vocals).
GAVIN HARRISON
Master drummer Gavin Harrison's debut album 'Sanity & Gravity' is a mindboggling collection of rhythmic compositions. Working largely with improvised material, Harrison makes canny use of MIDI hard disc recording to impose order and direction on the mad outpourings of Mick Karn and Richard Barbieri (ex-Japan), Gary Sanctuary, Sultan Khan (dilruba), Heitor Pereira of Simply Red and Jakko Jakszyk (see below). Dave Stewart guests on keyboards on two tracks.
'Sanity & Gravity' is available from Burning Shed.
CHRIS CUTLER (HENRY COW / ART BEARS)
Information on the Henry Cow dynasty, and indeed, a whole host of weird
& wonderful global musical exotica, can be obtained from Chris Cutler,
RéR Megacorp, 79 Beulah Road, Thornton Heath, Surrey CR7 8JG.
DAEVID ALLEN / GONG
Contact G.A.S. (Gong Appreciation Society), P.O. Box 871, Glastonbury,
Somerset BA6 9FE, UK. Daevid Allen's recent CD's (and stuff by Robert Wyatt
and a whole host of Canterbury-related musicians) can be obtained from
Voiceprint (UK record company - see MAIL ORDER section).
JAKKO JAKSZYK
Jakko, Dave Stewart's old crony in the unwisely-named 'Rapid Eye Movement' (we
thought of it first) has now attained superstardom by joining Level 42 on guitar.
However, don't let that put you off - he is also releasing interesting new solo
material, some of it in collaboration with three ex-members of 'Japan', on his
own 'Resurgence' label, distributed by Voiceprint.
RICK
BIDDULPH
Having occupied the bass role in 'Rapid
Eye Movement' (yes, it was a bad choice of name) 'Caravan
of Dreams' (Richard Sinclair's band) and now 'Mirage' (featuring various
ex-Camel and ex-Caravan members), Rick has recently released a CD of his own
evocative, soundtrack-like material, 'Second Nature', through Voiceprint.
VICTOR LEWIS-SMITH
The brilliant satirist and writer continues his attacks on the rich and pompous
with a series of scurrilous, hilarious and probably illegal phone calls. If
you find a copy of Victor's last release 'Nuisance Calls', buy it before someone
slaps an injunction on it!
